What's going on with tires and wheels? |

There have been a lot of rumors circulating in regards to tires and wheels for the 2010 racing season. We spoke directly with 600 Racing yesterday to get the most up-to-date news and information regarding these topics. This is what we found out.
Tires: There will be a new spec tire for the Legends in 2010. The BFG is being replaced with a tire from Federal Tire (http://www.federaltire.com/en/). Here are the facts;
1) The Federal tire is a directional tire 2) It has a similar durometer reading as the BFG 3) It is the same size as the BFG 4) It is approximately 3.5 pounds lighter than the BFG 5) In testing, it performed comparably to the BFG. The Federal tire will need to be cut, just like the BFG, for maximum performance. Our favorite tire cutter, Alfrey Motorsports, is already working a preferred cut for this tire using his precision, computer-controlled cutting machine. 6) There will not be a price increase, in fact, we could realize some savings 7) Durability should be comparable to the BFG based on the testing results
Important notes about the BFG;
1) The BFG will remain the spec tire for all INEX dirt legends races for the time being. The Federal tire will only be allowed in pavement competition. 2) The BFG will remain legal for competition on both pavement and dirt for the foreseen future. This will give all legend car competitors an opportunity to exhaust their inventory and ensure that no one is stuck with a pile of unusable tires.
Wheels: There will not be a change to the rules for wheel in 2010; however, a spec wheel rule will be enforced by INEX beginning in 2011. Here is the information directly from 600's website;
"Legends wheels have long been governed by the rule stating that any steel wheel the same size, weight, design, etc. as the stock wheels was legal to use at INEX sanctioned events.
As we have done with the Bandolero & Thunder Car wheels, INEX would like to bring the many different wheels being used on Legends Cars down to just the wheels that are used in the production of the Legends Cars at the 600 Racing manufacturing facility. By doing this, INEX will control the rising cost of wheels and at the same time, standardize the wheels being used on Legends Cars.
Starting March 1st, 2011, only Unique Wheels (part #246-3744 / Black & #34-3744 / Chrome) & Bassett Wheels (part #37ST3S / Silver & #37ST3 / Black) & "round hole" (10 holes) wheels as originally delivered by 600 Racing, Inc. will be permitted for use on Legends Cars at any INEX sanctioned event."
Bandolero: There will be no changes to the tires and/or wheels used in Bandolero competition. The Bandoleros will still use the same BFG tire as in 2009.
Don't hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you at some of the off-season trade show events and are excited about the 2010 racing season.
